How Sports help youths overcome trauma and drug abuse in displaced communities

We carried out a quick, facilitator-assisted assessment with children and youth in the camp to better understand their level of trauma exposure, its impact on their daily lives, and how our sport-based intervention is helping to mitigate these adverse effects. Because many participants are out of school and do not speak English, the process was conducted in simple, culturally relevant ways using local language translation, and guided discussions. Facilitators supported the children in expressing themselves through play, movement, and storytelling, making the exercise less intimidating and more relatable. This approach allowed us to capture important insights into their emotional well-being, coping strategies, and social interactions while also observing the protective role of sports in reducing distress, fostering resilience, and providing a healthy alternative to the risks of drug use and crime. In addition, participants identified as struggling with heightened distress or behavioral challenges were given access to a mental health counselor, who provides ongoing psychosocial support and referral where necessary, ensuring that those most at risk receive the care and guidance they need to begin their healing journey

This visit also integrated awareness sessions on drug abuse and the importance of clean sports, helping participants understand the dangers of substance misuse and its link to crime, violence, and broken futures. By reinforcing positive values such as teamwork, discipline, and resilience, sports become both a healing outlet and a preventive tool against risky behaviors. Comparing pre- and post-intervention results will allow us to measure improvements in emotional stability, self-esteem, and life orientation, while also tracking shifts in knowledge and attitudes about drugs and crime. Ultimately, this dual approach ensures that sports not only serve as therapy but also as a foundation for building healthier, drug-free, and future-focused young people.
