DESCRIPTION:Using Sports to Inspire Hope\, Unity\, and Resilience\nAt Pairs to Glory Foundation\, we believe that sports is more than a game\, it is a tool for healing\, empowerment\, and social transformation. This belief came alive during our Road Walk and Football Tournament at the Wassa Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) Camp\, Abuja\, where children\, youths\, and community members gathered not just to compete\, but to reclaim hope\, identity\, and purpose. \n Why Wassa IDP Camp?\nWassa IDP Camp is home to thousands of displaced families who have fled violence\, insecurity\, and conflict from different parts of Nigeria. Children and youths in such settings often face disrupted education\, trauma\, limited opportunities\, and increased vulnerability to crime\, substance abuse\, and social exclusion. \nThe Road Walk and Tournament were designed as part of the United by Sport: Every Child Deserves an Opportunity initiative—an intervention that uses sports as an entry point for psychosocial support\, community engagement\, and youth development. \nThe Road Walk: A Movement for Peace and Awareness\nThe event began with a Road Walk that brought together children\, youths\, coaches\, volunteers\, and community leaders. The walk symbolized unity\, resilience\, and a collective call for peace\, safety\, and opportunities for young people in vulnerable communities. \nParticipants carried messages of hope\, inclusion\, and the power of sports to transform lives. For many of the children\, it was their first opportunity to publicly express joy\, confidence\, and belonging in a safe environment. \n(https://funnykings.pixieset.com/idpcamp/) \nThe Football Tournament: More Than Competition\nFollowing the Road Walk\, the football tournament kicked off with teams drawn from within the camp and surrounding communities. The matches were filled with energy\, excitement\, and teamwork\, reflecting not only athletic talent but also the emotional and social impact of structured sports activities. \nBeyond the game\, the tournament served multiple purposes: \n\nPsychosocial support: Sports provided a safe outlet for emotions and stress among children affected by displacement and trauma.\nPositive youth engagement: The event created alternatives to idleness\, crime\, and substance abuse.\nCommunity cohesion: Parents\, leaders\, and youths came together in a shared experience of celebration and cooperation.\nTalent identification: Promising young players were identified for future mentorship and development opportunities.\n\nVoices from the Community\nParents and community leaders expressed appreciation for the initiative\, noting that the event brought joy\, structure\, and renewed motivation to children who had long faced uncertainty. \nThe Camp Chairman remarked that initiatives like this do not only keep children engaged but also restore dignity and hope in communities affected by displacement. \nThe children and youths also shared with us how they all could agree and be together despite being from different religions\, something that was hard to see in the past. \nAnother expressed how his behaviours improved and pressures to use substances were tackled by the group sessions held. \nImpact and Lessons Learned\nThe Road Walk and Tournament at Wassa IDP Camp demonstrated that: \n\nSports can serve as a powerful entry point for mental health support and social development.\nChildren in vulnerable settings thrive when given safe spaces\, encouragement\, and opportunities.\nCommunity-based sports interventions can strengthen relationships between youths\, parents\, and local stakeholders.\n\nThe event also reinforced the need for sustained interventions that combine sports\, mental health awareness\, education support\, and life skills development. \nWhat Comes Next?\nBuilding on the success of this event\, Pairs to Glory Foundation will continue to: \n\nStrengthen sports infrastructure in vulnerable communities.\nProvide psycho social support and substance abuse awareness for youths.\nTrain coaches and community volunteers as mentors and role models.\nExpand partnerships with local and international organisations.\nCreate pathways for talent development and social inclusion.\n\nThe journey at Wassa IDP Camp is only the beginning.
